About Us

Welcome to Ecumenical Water Network Africa.

Headquartered in Ibadan, Nigeria, EWNA is currently active in 7 African countries: Nigeria, Ghana, Kenya, Sierra Leone, South Africa, Togo, and The Gambia.

Who Are We

Ecumenical Water Network Africa (EWNA) is a faith-based network committed to water justice across the continent. We believe water is a sacred gift from God, a common good, and a fundamental human right that must be accessible to every African — not a commodity to be bought and sold.

Guided by Christian values and the teachings of the Gospel, we work with churches, ecumenical bodies, communities, and civil society organizations to ensure equitable access to clean and safe water. We strongly oppose the privatization of water services and advocate for public ownership, responsible management, and sustainable protection of Africa’s water resources.

Through theological reflection, community empowerment, advocacy, and practical action, EWNA amplifies the voices of the marginalized, promotes the Blue Community movement, and pushes for policies that put people and the environment before profit. Our ultimate vision is a continent where every person enjoys the God-given right to water, and where churches and faith communities lead the way in defending this precious resource for present and future generations.

Our Mission

To promote the responsible management, preservation, and equitable distribution of water resources across Africa. We resist the privatization of water, advocate for strong public water systems, amplify the voices of marginalized communities, and mobilize churches to become active agents of water justice.

Our Vision

A transformed Africa where every person has access to clean, affordable, and sustainable water and sanitation; where churches and faith communities lead the defense of water as a public good; and where water justice contributes to poverty eradication, climate resilience, and human dignity.

Our History

Our Core Programs

01.

Voices for Water Justice

This is our flagship program. It focuses on collecting, documenting, and amplifying the real stories and struggles of communities facing water injustice. Through this program, we produce JUSTWATER factsheets, host quarterly “Water Saves Lives” webinars, and present community voices at national and international forums such as World Water Day and World Toilet Day.

02.

Blue Community Initiative (Africa Chapter)

EWNA officially became a Blue Community in May 2024. This program encourages churches, schools, and communities to declare themselves Blue Communities by rejecting bottled water where tap water is safe, promoting public ownership of water, and becoming models of water justice.

03.

Together for Water Justice

Our broader advocacy framework that campaigns against water privatization and “water grabs.” We promote Public-Public Partnerships (PuP) as a better alternative to private sector control and push for policy reforms that recognize water as a human right.

04.

Capacity Building & Awareness

We organize training workshops, stakeholder awareness camps, and theological education for faith leaders, youth, women, and communities on water justice, sanitation, and climate resilience.

05.

Infrastructure Advocacy

We advocate for the rehabilitation and proper management of broken water infrastructure while pushing governments to increase public investment in water and sanitation services.

06.

Theological Reflection & Education

Integrates biblical teachings and Christian stewardship principles into water justice work. This program develops theological resources, reflections (such as those linked to the global “Seven Weeks for Water”), and equips churches to address water issues from a faith perspective.

Our Leadership

Our leadership structure is rooted in ecumenical values — collaborative, inclusive, and servant-hearted. We work closely with churches, ecumenical bodies, and civil society partners to ensure that EWNA remains a credible, impactful, and Spirit-led voice for water justice on the continent.
